Host your Christmas & New Year functions or any special occasion at City Oval Bowling Club in Ballarat. Enjoy a relaxing game of barefoot bowls, the perfect way to unwind on a sunny day. Whether it’s a work Christmas party, birthday gathering, or team-building event, our club offers a fun and memorable experience.

We provide bowls and friendly club volunteer members to introduce you to the art of bowling and experience this fun social game.

You can choose from two barefoot bowls sessions on the greens on most Fridays during daylight saving hours, each of 90 minutes on the greens.

You are of course most welcome to arrive earlier and stay later to enjoy a drink from the bar and chat with your friends.

Barefoot Bowls Session Times – Fridays during Daylight Savings:

Session 1. Friday 4.30pm to 6.00pm
Session 2. Friday 6.00pm to 7.30pm

We have 6 rinks available per session, with a maximum of 8 bowlers per rink (making for a total of 48). For bookings that exceed this limit, please contact us (cityovalbc@gmail.com) directly to enquire about availability as we do have additional rinks available, depending on club events, etc.

Pricing

Bowling is priced at $120 per rink with a maximum of 8 bowlers per rink. For school student groups and special needs groups please email your request to cityovalbc@gmail.com with subject heading “Barefoot Bowls Special Request.”

How many rinks should I book?

You are required to book 1 rink for every 8 people intending to bowl. Only 8 people can play per rink at one time. Eg. For a group of 20 bowlers, you will need to book 3 rinks.

NOTE: November and December bookings especially fill very quickly so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Barefoot Bowling FAQs

When you arrive please head to the Members Bar.

A bar TAB, if required, should be organised with the bar manager at this time too. Our volunteer members will guide you to your allocated area and provide a demonstration before you begin.

You are required to bowl barefoot, in socks or flat-soled shoes.! Definitely no heels or platforms of any kind.

Everything you need to bowl with will be provided including the bowls, jacks and mats.

There are seats and tables available on the verandah near the BBQ. If a group is using the BBQ, that group will have priority in this area. There is also seating available along some edges of the greens and tables can be made available to set out food, nibbles and drinks etc if required.

The club has a large undercover BBQ to hire for self-catering groups, on a first in first served basis.

A BBQ Hire fee of $25 per group applies which includes hire of the BBQ, platter trays and cooking utensils. Guests are required to bring all other items including food, serviettes etc and clean the BBQ after use.

Yes. Since our club does not cater for events, you are welcome to bring some food items to the club, including such things as platters of food/nibbles/fruit. Alternatively, you may choose to order food delivery (eg pizzas etc) but you will need to bring your own plates and serviettes etc.

If you book multiple rinks they will be allocated next to each other to the best of our ability to do so.

Full pre-payment of $120 per rink is required to confirm your booking. Bookings are to be made online and paid for through our booking portal. Bookings must be made at least 7 days prior to the date you require.

Our friendly volunteer members will give you a demonstration and explain the rules when you arrive at the Club. They are happy to answer any questions and give you all the bowling tips you’ll need for a fun experience on the greens.

Children are welcome at the Club but must be closely supervised by their parents at all times. The greens are strictly for bowling and are not a play area. Children are not allowed to run or play on the greens and disrupt other patrons.

Parents or guardians accept full responsibility for minors and indemnify the Club.

When deciding on your booking numbers, teenagers who are intending to bowl are to be included when nominating the number of rinks required.

There is no cost for primary school children from grade 3-6 who are welcome to bowl with their parent/guardian to assist with supervision by sharing the same rink.

Remember: bowling is an outdoor activity. Cold weather without rain will not be considered a reason for cancellation.

If the weather is forecast for a 50% chance of more than 1mm of rain during your bowling time, cancellations will be considered within 24 hours of your booking start time.

If the weather is forecast to be 36 degrees C or higher during your bowling time, cancellations will be considered within 24 hours of your booking start time.

All Barefoot Bowls bookings are allocated to our outside area, which includes limited shelter. Our function room can also be booked at an additional cost. We recommend booking the clubhouse for groups of 50 people or more.

The bar will be open during your bowling session, providing a range of beverages at very affordable prices. You can set up a tab on the day or guests can purchase drinks at their own expense. No beverages of any kind can be brought into the club including soft drinks and juices. We have a full club liquor licence under which BYO is not permitted.
